There are 2,600 foundations in Finland only, and 185,000 in Europe. They are built to advance a public benefit purpose over the long term. But what does this mean for those who govern them? This session offers a concise introduction to the world of foundations and a candid look at board service: what foundation board members actually do, what responsibilities and dilemmas the role entails, and what kinds of expertise, judgement and personal qualities foundations look for in new board members.

Liisa is an experienced CEO, board professional and philanthropy expert with a strong record in governance, strategy and long-term value creation. As CEO of the Association of Finnish Foundations, she represents a sector investing €600m annually in research, the arts and wider societal development, and works closely with national partners on regulatory and policy frameworks.
Liisa is valued for her strategic clarity, collaborative leadership and ability to align diverse interests in complex environments. She holds several board and advisory roles in different organisations and contributes to various national expert groups. She works fluently in Finnish, Swedish and English, with casual proficiency in Italian and German.
The talk will be held in Finnish, but English will be chosen if needed.
